ARGENTINE OR GREATER SILVER SMELT

BIOLOGY The argentine is widely distributed in the North Atlantic and is exploited primarily as an industrial species for the production of fish meal. They are predominantly a deepwater species with a very wide depth range from 140 to 1440 m. Argentine grow slowly to a length of about 70 cm and can live for over 35 years. They mature between 5 and 9 years old when 26 to 38 cm long. Spawning occurs in spring and summer. The species has a low resilience to exploitation. ADVICE Fisheries for deep-water species have developed rapidly in recent years with little knowledge of the state of stocks or the impacts of fishing. This deep-water species is targeted by industrial fisheries that process it into fish protein. Argentine can only sustain very low fishing levels and it is unknown if these levels have been exceeded due to the lack of data available. It is unlikely they will be offered for sale, but if they are avoid eating.
